REI's Co-op model means your return window depends on membership status — and that's before you factor in the separate rule for electronics. Here's the breakdown.

REI Return Policy at a Glance

Status / Category Return Window
Co-op members (most items, including e-bikes) 365 days
Non-members 90 days
Outdoor electronics (GPS watches, cameras, bike computers) 90 days — for everyone
Mail returns $7.99 fee deducted ($21.95 for oversized)

Membership Changes Everything

A one-time $30 lifetime membership extends your return window from 90 days to a full year — and that's on top of an annual dividend (typically ~10% back on eligible purchases) that often covers the membership cost on a single gear purchase. For anyone shopping at REI more than once a year, this math works out fast.

The Electronics Exception Applies to Everyone

Regardless of membership, GPS devices, action cameras, bike computers, and similar electronics are capped at 90 days. A Co-op member who assumes they have a full year on a Garmin watch and tries to return it on day 95 will be turned down — membership doesn't override this rule.

Used Gear Is Genuinely Returnable

REI's "Satisfaction Guarantee" allows returns of used items if you're not satisfied — testing hiking boots on one trip is fine. Completing a full thru-hike and then returning the boots is the kind of pattern REI's fraud monitoring is designed to catch.

Mail Returns Cost Money

Returning in-store is free. Mailing it back deducts $7.99 from your refund ($21.95 for oversized items like skis or bike trainers).

Where Members Lose Track

The 365-day member window feels endless — which is exactly why people forget about it until it's gone. And because the electronics exception cuts across both member and non-member status, it's easy to assume your GPS watch has a year on it when it actually only has 90 days.

Perkminders solves this automatically. Connect your accounts once — bank-level encrypted via Plaid, billing through Stripe — and Perkminders tracks each REI purchase against the right window: 365 days for members on most gear, 90 days for non-members, and 90 days for electronics regardless of membership status. You'll get a reminder by email or push before the deadline passes. Your bank login is never stored — only transaction details — and you can exclude any store from reminders if you'd rather not track it.
